Trusting God When Obedience Costs You

Overcoming the fear of financial or personal loss when choosing to follow God’s direction.

Have you ever hesitated to do the right thing because of what it might cost you? In modern psychology, there is a phenomenon known as the “sunk cost fallacy” the tendency to continue investing in a losing proposition just because you’ve already poured time, money, or effort into it. In the kingdom of God, however, obedience often requires us to let go of what we’ve already paid for, trusting that our losses are never the final word.

The Question: “What About My Investment?”

In 2 Chronicles 25:9, King Amaziah found himself in a massive dilemma. He had hired a hundred thousand mercenary troops from Israel to go to battle with him, paying them a hefty sum of one hundred talents of silver. But a man of God came to him with a hard truth: God was not with these troops, and Amaziah needed to send them home.

Amaziah’s immediate reaction is incredibly relatable: “But what shall we do about the hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?” He was focused entirely on the sunk cost. He felt he couldn’t afford to obey God because obedience looked like a financial disaster.

The Divine Equation

The response from the man of God is a truth every believer needs to anchor their heart to: “The Lord is able to give you much more than this.”

When God asks you to walk away from a bad business partnership, a compromised investment, or a situation that requires you to compromise your integrity, the enemy will always whisper, “Look at what you’re losing.” But God’s economy doesn’t operate on scarcity. He is not limited by what you have walked away from in order to stay alignment with His will.

Conclusion

Your past investments, losses, or mistakes do not dictate your future provision. If obedience requires you to write off a “hundred talents,” let it go. The God you serve possesses limitless resources, and He is fully capable of restoring, multiplying, and giving you far more than whatever you left behind.
