Hannah’s Prayer and God’s Timing
When others are ahead of you and you are constantly compared—or you are constantly comparing yourself with others—it can feel heavy. Let’s face it, we all have been here to some degree. But for some, this season feels like a desert of barrenness that stretches on for a long time. We might chalk it up to God’s timing, but we can also bring our raw, honest pain to Him in prayer.
The Weight of Comparison and the Pain of Barrenness
In 1 Samuel, Hannah was barren, and year by year she was ridiculed for her barrenness. She couldn’t take it anymore, so she poured out her heart and prayed to God. God heard her, remembered her, and blessed her with a son whose name is written in the Bible as a great man of God—Samuel, which means “God has heard.” Her prayers were answered, and she was joyful, singing a song to the Lord.
When you are walking through a prolonged season of waiting while watching others seemingly race ahead, remember how to bring your heart before God:
- Pour out your sorrow: Pray to God in the abundance of sorrow in your heart so He hears you, remembers you, and fulfills your petition.
- Align your heart: Of course, your prayers must align with God’s purpose, or at least be a good and righteous thing you ask for.
- Trust the ultimate fulfillment: Shiloh meant “city of peace” where they went to worship the Lord annually, which is also another name for Christ. Through Christ, may your petitions be heard.
Setting Up Your Banners of Joy
Even in a long season of barrenness, your story does not end in the desert. God sees your tears, hears your silent prayers, and remembers you in His perfect timing.
As the Scripture declares:
“We will rejoice in your salvation, And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.”
- Release the Comparison: Refuse to measure your worth by the milestones of others. Your journey is uniquely held in God’s hands.
- Bring It to the Altar: Like Hannah, do not hold back your grief or your deep desires; bring them boldly to the Lord of peace.
- Anticipate His Answer: Look forward with hope, knowing that God hears, remembers, and is faithful to fulfill the petitions of those who trust in Him.
